Development of a strategic/business plan for a Project Managed organisation
OBJECTIVE: To clearly identify the Strategic & Business Planning Process for a Project Managed Organisation
Benefits and Outcomes:
- Stakeholders are consulted during all phases of the process.
- Stakeholders take ownership for outcomes.
- The Business Plan is implemented against a schedule with assigned responsibilities for action.
The process for planning and implementing a Strategic Plan involves:
- Meeting with the convenor and the executive to determine the needs and requirements for development of the Strategic Plan and signing a contractual agreement.
- Compile a Project Management Plan (PMP) for the initiative and have it endorsed.
- Conduct a Strategic Search Conference with related stakeholders.
- Compile a Report on Proceedings.
- Compile a Draft Strategic Plan and distribute for amendment/agreement.
- Complete the Strategic Plan by defining those activities listed as operations and projects.
- Define responsibilities for each.
- Agree on project teams and brief them on the priority development of PMPs.
- Compile a completion report for the convenor and executive.
- Note: the executive usually requests a business and marketing plan to be completed as the next phase.
The process for developing and implementing a Business Plan involves:
- Meeting with the convenor and the executive to determine the needs and requirements for development of a Business Plan and sign a contractual agreement.
- Compile a Project Management Plan (PMP) for the initiative and have it endorsed.
- Compile a Strategic Plan (see BPPM Product Sheet No 12) if not already completed.
- Conduct a Business Planning Conference/Meeting to confirm the framework, initiate concepts and assign responsibilities for collecting data.
- Compile the Business Plan by conducting:
- Business Analysis
- Analysis of Products, Services and Clients
- Analysis of the Market
- Analysis of the Competition
- Summarising results of a SWOT analysis
- Write the Plan. - Endorse the Plan and implementation by way of a PMP.
